The Raid

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Welsh premiere of new Indonesian action flick ‘The Raid’ last night. For those who didn’t know, Wales is that pointy out bit to the West of the United Kingdom. I know what you’re thinking, ‘Why is an Indonesian film having a premiere in Wales?’ Well i’ll tell you; the director is a Welshman (Gareth Evans). Simple as that.

Set in the slums of Jakarta the film’s main focus and setting is an impenetrable 30 floor apartment block, a safe house that is home to some of the city’s most hardened criminals.

A SWAT team is tasked with taking down the notorious drug baron who runs the safe house and it falls to the rookie member of the team Rama, played by Iko Uwais, to complete the mission.

I know Wonderpod is mostly a gaming site, but watching this film, I was reminded by lots of elements from many of my favourite games. There is non-stop violence in this film, pulled off with the most imaginary ways possible. Bad guys dying in all sorts of ways, whether it being by emptying the contents of a machine gun into places they didn’t know they had, by hammer, or by expertise martial art sequences, that made me feel like a ten year old kid again after watching a Jackie Chan film, and very tempted to head into my room, take my shirt off, and kicking the living arse out of imaginary ninjas.

If you are a gaming fan, and I suspect you are, then this film is well worth checking out. It’s one of the best games i’ve never played.

Out in cinemas in the UK from Friday 18th May. Check your local listings from when it’s near you!

I totally missed this Chris. I like the sound of this film, and with Jakarta as the setting… well that opens a bunch of doors to some seedy criminal activity (not hating on the good people of Jakarta, just the organized crime aspect. We areas like this in Canada too).

I bet you beat up those imaginary ninjas real good! SHURIKEN TO THE EYE!
