PS4 is upon us

So by now you would have heard, or seen the announcement of the PS4 that was made yesterday (20th February).

I stayed up way past my bedtime to watch the three hour conference. The light show at the beginning was pretty cool and got me a little hyped up and excited. I can’t help but feeling that I was a little violated by a bit of hypnotism, but all jokes aside, I was pretty excited about it.

When they played the startup sound of the PSone, that got me hook, line and sinker. If I could have a tattoo of a sound then it would be of that.

Controller

My first impression of the controller is that it was a bit ugly. It reminded me of one of those cheap ‘plug in and play’ knockoffs that are pre-loaded with versions of Mario and Atari classics that you can buy cheap at markets or online. I’m glad that it has been kept to that of the original shape and the touchpad on there may be a nifty little function, although i’m worried that they will add unnecessary parts into games to make use of it, as they often do with the PSVita.

Games

We had a sneak preview of several games in development for the PS4.

Knack – A third person game where you take charge of some kind of robot. It reminded me a lot of Ratchet and Clank.

Killzone Shadow Fall – This looked great but what we saw is more than likely a tech demo that won’t even feature in the game.

Deep Down – Dragons and swords. Always a winner

Watch Dogs – Ubisoft’s open world game, that actually looks fantastic.

Drive Club – A team based racing game

Announcements from Blizzard  that they are working on console versions of Diablo 3 for both PS3 and PS4.

Also an announcement from Square Enix that there will be a Final Fantasy based announcement at this years E3. Not much of a reaction to this from the room apart from utter confusion.

They showed off what the PS4 will be capable of with a 30,000 polygons demo of an old mans face which looks very impressive and boasts CGI film quality gameplay.

News of remote play, using the PSVita in much of the same way that the Wii U tablet works with the Wii U.

PS Move

A new sculpting tool which looks like a lot of fun but will undoubtedly be used as a tool to draw and share dicks on the internet. The tagline Sony are using is “PS4 – The creative console”.

There seems to be a big emphasis on community on the PS4, with the games reflecting this and lots of functionalities with social networking sites such as Facebook.

The console

So what you are all waiting for. What does the PS4 look like? Well, they didn’t actually show us that. I was a bit disappointed as it was what I was most looking forwardto, and most excited about but they need something to talk about at E3, I suppose.

Hints of a release date of “Holidays 2013”.

Overall, it was a decent look at what to expect but only time will tell. After all, a console is only as good as it’s games.

I also liked how they didnt say any of the specs of the ps4, the only thing they mentioned was that it has 8 gigs of RAM and they briefly mentioned that it would not be backward compatible.
