My FPS Philosophy

Most of you reading this fine blog, have heard me complain about faux elite players. Tools who are more interested in kills than they are in being a good teammate. In my mind it takes more than just killing other players to make a good well rounded teammate. Some of you may be thinking that this is just my old man get off the lawn attitude and that I need to get over it. The reality is I base my assertion of what a good player is off of my experiences in Battlefield 1942 and it will never change from that.

There was this clan full of supposedly elite knuckle heads, but you could tell that they played fairly selfishly. We always played capture the flag and would always lose to these guys. I will give them credit for being damn good death match players. They had kill/death ratios to be proud of. Thing is capture the flag is an objective based game. Finally someone suggested we just grab a couple flags set up a solid defense and see what happens. As you might of suspected we kicked their ass all over the place. Seeing supposedly elite players get mowed down over and over will make your ego swell. It would be stupid to deny that. The team I was on as individuals were average to above average players. Yet when you combined them in a solidly run team using the game to our advantage we were almost unbeatable.

What I mean by using the game to our advantage is we didn’t have 8 assault class and one engineer. We never had 9 snipers who didn’t understand that you can in fact kill people with a pistol. Each night there was a different person rocking the top of the score board and that made it even better. All of us as a group were comfortable with being top of the heap one night and grinding it out in the trenches the next. In the span of a month I would guess we beat that clan about fifteen times without losing a match. All because we understood the mechanics of the game and used them to our advantage. I am sure some of you are saying, sure it worked in capture the flag, but you still sucked in a death match.

If you believe that last statement you would be 100% wrong. It is called “team” death match for a reason folks. Now you can begin to understand why I absolutely will not tolerate selfish players and constantly mock them. You want to act like Rambo go play a free for all match. They are included with most FPS games and it’s the perfect place for kill/death ratio whores. You give me a team of average players who want to play like a team and I will put them against anyone. While they may not win every match, there going to do better than eight or nine clowns each doing their own thing.

What really gets on my nerves is when your supposedly friends with one of these Rambo types. In fact its almost impossible to call them friends if they play selfishly while in a group of buddies. The best part is most of the time when players do this they don’t finish at the top of the score board. They might be in the top three, but rarely are they number one. When your off playing Rambo you have no teammates to back you up and that increases your chances of getting no help in a bad situation. Meanwhile the good player who stuck with the team fared far better. Less than 1% of the guys you see on top of score boards in any FPS games these days are the lone wolf egomaniacs. I would put my last dollar on that.

So while I am never going to be mistaken for a good FPS player, I know good and well I will grind it out every night for the sake of my teammates. Give me a medic kit or armor lock and turn me loose. As long as the team wins, I could care less where I place. My ego doesn’t like it much, but I stuffed his ass in a box years ago. Basically if all you care about is kill/death then your not elite. Your a selfish one dimensional meat shield from what I can tell.

Its a good philosophy when playing team games like battlefield bad company 2 and, I am guessing ,Medal Of Honor thats for sure.

I hate it when I see nothing but snipers playing an objective game that requires the team to move forward and take territories and flags. Or nothing but assault classes attacking and no defenders in a game where protecting your base or defending a flag is just as important as capturing a new one. While almost expected in games like COD and Halo ,I find it extra annoying when playing gams designed for good team work and classes and this happens.

I like playing online FPs with you because your a good team mate, hell when it was 11 vs 2 and we were trapped at our spawn , you still gave it your best shot while all the others just quit.

Are you talking about someone in particular, I wonder ??

He is the poster child for that behavior, but if I had to put a number to the amount I have seen before him I would say it is in the hundreds, Probably fifty or so after meeting him. He is someone you can point to that does a lot of it wrong in my mind.

It's a shame that there are so many games that include variants that people do not seem to understand. Instead of enjoying the diversity of a good FPS game modes, some folks certainly fall into a mental trap and assume not adapting their style of play is necessary to actually win. Sure, you might get to look at the stats and get all giddy. In reality, if the point system is based on an objective or more, these people have missed the point… and have lost.

Maybe I am nuts, but it seems gamers are the worst about the lone wolf/prima donna attitude when it comes to playing on teams. I am betting more and more I will stick with BF type games and avoid COD like games in the future. I just get bored and annoyed with arcade shooters far to fast anymore. Although our last few nights in Halo have been damn good

Its funny because its the actual games that are designed specifically for tactical, team based, class focused online play that piss me off the most when the rambo/sniper/ "I don't care what the game type is" sort of mentality comes into play. When they play these games like an arcade shooter, I might as well pop in COD or Halo and play a game designed with lone wolf in mind because you both expect it and the game is designed more for that type of play.

In my opinion, Jack asses in Halo and COD = bad

Jack asses in BF and other games like it = worse
