PatMan Picks Retro PC Games: High Octane

Welcome to another PatMan Picks Retro PC games. This time around I am picking one of my favorite racing/action titles on the PC. It was made by the folks at Bullfrog using the same engine that powered the classic Magic Carpet game, which I may or may not talk about another time. The title I am talking currently about is, is of course, High Octane. High Octane is another classic PC game that didn’t get as much attention as it truly deserved, but I probably played enough of it to count for many of those that missed out. For its time it was a very smooth running racing and action game with futuristic hover racing vehicles. I really enjoyed both the speed and the action of High Octane. At times I would play it just as a racing game, taking time only to replenish my flue supplies as I frantically headed to the finish line. Other times I remember going all out on the guns and shooting everything that got in my way, or tried to escape me. This didn’t win me very many races, but I didn’t care it was so fun it was worth finishing near last just to shoot my opponents up. The game was developed in a very quick period of time by Bullfrog and to be honest it does show some sings of “less than polished” visuals and gameplay at times. If they had taken more time to enhance the Magic Carpet engine for a racing title the game may have been absolutely stellar, however as it stood it was very good and fun as they left it. There could have been a few more tracks, but what was there was excellent, smooth and fun. I spent many an hour in front of my PC playing High Octane.
