PatMan Picks N64 Favorites: Killer Instinct Gold.

With the massive popularity of the latest Mortal Kombat reboot and the most recent Street Fighter game one thing is certain. Gamers are in love with the combination of current, cutting edge visuals and sounds along with the return of a more, classic, 2D fighting style of old.  While the old Streetfighters and MK games were very popular ,Nintendo console owners were lucky enough to have another console exclusive no less, fun fighting game to enjoy as well. That franchise was Killer Instinct. To put it bluntly, the Killer Instinct fighting games were heavily inspired by the two most popular fighter franchises of the time, MK and Street Fighter. However, Killer Instinct Gold was a great title in its own right, even if both the fighting characters and the lists of special moves in KI Gold were similar to the “top 2 fighting games” of the time. Without a doubt, KI Gold on the N64 could hold its own against the big 2 fighters and even surpass them on some levels. As a matter of fact, the visuals in KI gold were far superior to Street fighters and the Mortal Kombats at the time. Also, the utilization of combo systems and combo breakers helped distinguish the Killer Instinct games and give them a fun feel of their very own. The list of fighters were diverse and interesting, and the sound track was absolutely great. Especially that great intro music that I will always love. As previously mentioned, the reboots and sequels of the Street fighter and Mortal Kombat games have proven to be very popular and this would suggest that the time is all but perfect for a KI3. If Rare was ever going to make a high definition and gorgous KI3, now would be the most logical time for it! Unfortunately, as we have found as of late with Rare, they are not exactly listening to the fans or to logic for that matter but following Microsoft’s orders to spend all that time creating all the avatar cloths and finding the time to only make one Kinect title per year in between. Oh well, we will always have the old KI games to love!
