21. Jurassic Park

Many games based on Jurassic Park were released on multiple platforms, and a majority of them are all unique. This adaptation of the movie is interesting because it not only let's you play as Grant, but also as a Raptor. The game is similar when playing both, but some stages are made exclusively for each, and of course they play differently. Grant uses a variety of weapons to subdue dinosaurs, while the raptor uses his agility and claws to get through stages. Grant also had to contend with the T-Rex which is easily the game's highlight. The game is also dark and actually scary at times. It's worth a play if you're a fan of the movie, though at times the controls may be a bit wonky.

20. Ghostbusters

A wide variety of Ghostbusters games were released for almost every system of the time, from Atari to the NES, and the Genesis. These games however usually varied in quality. The Genesis version however, is substantially superior to all other versions, and it's unsure why. I guess this developer got it right this time. You choose to play as either of the three ghostbusters. Mostly cause black people don't exist as protagonists in video games, so there is no Ernie Hudson. Each character varies slightly in speed and health, but they all play the same. There are four stages you play where you go to different environments and fight your way through to the minibosses and final boss. When you defeat a miniboss you capture it just like they do in the movie. At the end of the stage you're paid for how many ghosts you captured and overall for defeating the final boss. You use that money to buy better equipment and items to aid you through the later levels, so it has a fun progression. The visuals, although cartoony are fun to look at, and the game itself is just memorable all around. This one is a must-play as far as Genesis games go.

19. General Chaos

General Chaos is a little known game where you fight in a conflict to conquer a continent. In each battle you choose what type of team to send, the different character types of strengths and weaknesses including range, damage, and speed. The object of each map is to wipe out the enemy, but secondary objectives and bonuses will appear on certain battles. Each battle gets you closer to the enemy capital, but a loss sends you back, so it's a back and forth struggle to victory of defeat. It's a fun game, and certainly one of the most underrated games on the Genesis. Give it a try if you haven't.

18. Disney's Aladdin

Another example of a game that has too completely different versions on both Genesis and SNES. The SNES version was made by Capcom, while this one Virgin Interactive. Both are good games, but since this one is Genesis exclusive, it's on this list. You control, obviously enough, Aladdin. The game does a great job of following the events of the movie. You fight with a sword, and throwing apples. The levels are all diverse, and some bonus levels are tossed throughout. The game is a blast to the very end, though the bosses are pretty weak. Even Jafar for as cheap as he is, just spam those apples, and he's down for the count. Still, it's a great game, and both are worth playing.

17. Shining Force

Shining Force is a turn-based strategy game where you command different characters in combat. At the time, the game looked great, and still does. Each character had their strengths and weaknesses, and need to be utilized properly, or else they fall. Also, the character you play, Max, is the most useful fighter, and yet you need to be careful of not dying, cause while your other characters can be revived, if Max dies, the game is over. So careful planning is needed in this role playing game, which has become a staple of the Genesis library. If you've never played it, it's time to undo that.

(I would just like to comment on these links I am posting. If possible, I post TAS videos, also known as Tool Assisted Speedruns. That's why the player seems in a hurry. If I can't find a good video, I try to find gameplay footage. In this game's case, there is a TAS, but since this is an RPG, the video is absurdly long. Obviously don't watch the entire video, it's purpose is to show game play. So watch it for a few minutes to get the gist, and move on.)

16. The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Three Jurassic Park games were released for the Genesis. I would just pick one and leave it at that. However, this game, despite the subpar movie it's based on, is actually pretty cool. You play as a nameless hunter who is dispatched to the isles. Each level is a big hub with different missions to complete. You use a variety of weapons, commandeer vehicles, and hunt dinosaurs. If you go the non-lethal route, you'll get tokens which after collecting five, a supply drop will land nearby, rewarding you for doing so. When you complete all the missions in an area, you get to do the bonus level. In these levels you do things like ride a motorcycle to chase down a raptor, or escape a T-Rex. I decided to include both, but if I had to choose between both games on the list... I'd pick this one. Overall, it's the better game.

For the video link this time around, I'll just show you the T-Rex escape bonus mission. The main game may seem underwhelming, but levels like this are worth it.

15. Dick Tracy

After the subpar NES game, I am sure not much was expected for this offering on the Genesis. But once again, we're proven wrong. As Dick Tracy you play in a side scrolling fashion in the foreground and fight gangsters ahead of you, but also need to contend with enemies in the background. You use your pistol to fight enemies in front, and your Tommy Gun to waste people in the back. The game controls well, and sticks to an action focus, instead of needing to collect clues like the NES version. It's fun, simple, and rewarding. Definitely a pardon to the franchise.

14. World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

It's amazing how good Disney games were back in the day. Nowadays they're stale and unimaginative. But back then, there were so many good games made by Disney, I could make a Top 10 on that topic alone. I know people prefer Castle of Illusion, in fact, I remember renting that game almost everyday, but this game, I played through many times, and it's in my opinion, the better game. You play as either Mickey or Donald, as stage magicians, when fiddling with their props, they come across one they've never seen before, and accidentally enter a strange new world. They now travel through, attempting to find their way back home in time for their magic show. The game play again is not amazingly substantial, Mickey and Donald only have one attack, and the game is pretty easy throughout, but the design is what makes this game. The levels and music are great, and the co-op is solid. New levels are put in just for 2-players, and you need to work together to get through them. I love when games do that. If you got a buddy, this is a game worth trying out.

13. Altered Beast

This game is technically the port of an arcade game, however it's still a Sega game through and through, and the purpose of the Genesis was to make a home console capable of arcade style game play. Plus, if there was ever a Genesis game more recognizable than Sonic, it's this game. You play the role of some nameless something or other resurrected from the dead to save a damsel in distress. As you navigate the levels, you gain bonus power ups which make you stronger, until finally, you transform into a beast. Each level has a different beast to turn into and a boss. This game is one of the greats of the console, and if you've never played it, I'd like to know what rock you live under.

12. Contra: Hard Corps

Contra up until the release of this game was a Nintendo thing. So too were a lot of Konami franchises. That was until they realized this and made unique games exclusively for the Genesis as a way to make up for that. To that end, the first of those games was Contra: Hard Corps. What else needs to be said? It's fucking Contra. But if there is one thing that does need to be said, is this game also features branching paths. You make choices which change where you go, and how the story plays out. You also have an assortment of characters to choose from, each with different weapon sets. So this game is a bit different from other entries in the series, but still in the old school Contra style. Must-play.
