Digital Home Yo

Another Friday and that means another Wonderpod. Well that is coming up a little later, this is my morning selfish post. Obviously most of you would rather I just post the podcast and bugger off. Yeah, that is not happening, I got stuff to say and it is more fun with victims. These posts are my continuing attempts at committing verbal assault. If a bullet can commit rape, then by god my text can cause assault.

Last night the subject of digital versus physical copies came up again when recording the podcast. Glasenator being a younger gamer, it really surprises me that he isn’t a fan of digital. What I find more surprising is a good portion of the people I talk to seem to prefer good old CD or hard copies. What is interesting is I don’t care. I am equally comfortable with my games on steam as I am my 360 discs. Still the fact that quite a few of my younger friends still prefer hard copies is odd to me. It stands to reason that younger gamers would be more in to the whole digital scene. I think we had all better be ready to deal with digital distribution taking over. It means less cost for the publishers and they are harder to pirate if distributed through something like Steam. The good news is, we are likely to see the cost of games go down somewhat as digital takes over.

I think my brain is going to explode. I am listening to the podcast on my desk top while I type this post up on my lap top. If I had a third computer I could be doing the banner in photo shop. All for you dear audience, all for you. I see no way this is going to have a bad out come. Although they may find me one morning dead at my desk with head phones on. Cause of death will be complete confusion for a tiny brain

Sometimes I make the mistake of reading things I shouldn’t. Like last year when the reviews for the Medal of Honor reboot were out. I would of really done myself a favor if I had avoided a lot of the ignorance and stupidity that got spewed around after it launched. I found the game to have merit and listening to idiots was just dumb. That said I read something this morning on Home Front that does give me some concern. I was over at Destructoid watching the latest trailer for the game and the subject of patriotism came up. Basically the sentiment was if the game played up American patriotism to much it would cause a lot of people outside America to avoid the game. On top of that to much of the American Patriot schtick would cause the game to be ruined. Thinking of it in those terms I am kind of torn on the issue. On one hand leaving that element out would be a smart move as the a lot of the world see us as assholes. So making the game something everyone can enjoy is a good thing. On the other hand there is something to be said for being proud of where your from and showing that fact. In terms of the game your talking about an occupied country that is trying to win back its freedom. Doesn’t that warrant showing a certain level of Patriotism? I suspect if it was set in any other country the patriotism question wouldn’t even be an issue. Because the game is set in occupied America is has become one. I am not sure the question is fair, but it is valid. America has gone a bit over board with the patriotism routine. I think Kaos as a developer is smart enough to side step this issue.

The dick in me has to wonder though, are some gamers just looking for a reason to call this game a failure. It is a new IP that promises not to be another Halo or COD clone. So there is going to be a portion of gamers who are going to throw as much shit at it as they can. In an attempt to make sure the game does poorly. As I have said before, it is not the known or familiar so some people don’t want to give it an honest chance. My dick instincts a side I do think the fear of over the top patriotism having an affect on the game is a valid one. For the record it isn’t enough to make me pass on the game and I still feel confident it will be good.
