Brawler of the Year – 1997

This was a slow year for brawlers (unless Wiki’s being a jerk). However, there were some interesting titles this year all the same.

Battle Circuit (Arcade)

You want crazy? You want over the top? You want bizarre? Then this is your game! Battle Circuit is one of those lesser known Capcom arcade titles that, as you may have guessed, was never ported to anything ever and only existed on the arcades. Not sure why, but it seems like whenever that’s the case it’s always something truly awesome.

The characters, enemies, environments, and just plain everything is bizarre, crazy, and totally awesome. High production values aside, this is a highly competent and fun experience that’s well worth checking out.

Runner Ups

I would like to point out that there is ACTUALLY a good PC brawler this year. It’s not great, but it’s still unique and fun. Actually, Fighting Force is really the only game I couldn’t recommend and only because it comes off as a mediocre and shoddily made Die Hard Arcade wannabe. While DHA was awesome Fighting Force just plain isn’t.

Electronic Popple (PC)
Fighting Force (PS1)
Oriental Legend (Arcade)
Panzer Bandit (PS1)
