PatMan Picks Retro PC Games.Star Wars Rebel Assault.

What can I mention that I haven’t already discussed about Star Wars and PC games. I love Star Wars. I love video games. So, it was really only a matter of time until I talked about my first ever CD ROM PC game, Star Wars Rebel Assault. I enjoyed this title way back on my 486 66 with 8 MEGS of RAM, Sound Blaster sound card and my super fast 4X CD ROM drive. At the time, it was a pretty bad ass PC and could run these “new CD ROM games” very well.  Star Wars Rebel Assault had some of the best visuals I had ever seen in a video game, at the time. It also had great sound effects and of course that classic soundtrack only now for the first time ever it was not a less than perfect video game rendition of the soundtrack, thanks to the wonders of CD ROM, it WAS the real sound track. The game play was pretty restricted to “on rails” and thus had very little freedom of movement, but that didn’t matter for me at the time, it felt like I was almost playing IN the movies. With its video clips taken right from the movie ,very impressive visuals, movie quality music, and a story line that happened in the same time line as the movie, Star Wars Rebel Assault was a great game for any Star Wars fan and I enjoyed playing it over and over back in the day.  Unfortunately, unlike the last Star Wars Retro PC classic I covered, Dark Forces, Rebel Assault has not aged very well at all and going back to play it now would be almost painful. The visuals of modern PC games are far superior and running in real time, non rendered and not on rails. And the controls were very non precise by todays standards which would drive me nuts today. Also, the sound acting has a lot to be desired when looking back at it now. Games have obviously moved on from the original PC CD ROM era but make no mistake, Rebel Assault was a great game at the start of this era and truly a  PC classic that I will always remember fondly. The force was strong with this one.
