Adventure Game of the Year – 1992

There were 17 games this year. While certain titles were obvious runner ups for me, it took some time to decide #3. Sure, I already pretty much had in mind what I wanted for the top 2, but the 3rd was especially elusive for a time. This was an…interesting…year for adventure games. You’ll start to see more and more “pervert” titles on this list. I mean, sure, I liked games like Leisure Suit Larry, but some of these are just ridiculous.

#3 – Dark Seed

Dark Seed is a game I just familiarized myself with recently. It starts out simply enough with YOUR FUCKING SKULL BEING CRACKED OPEN AND AN ALIEN EMBRYO BEING FORCEFULLY INSERTED INSIDE! OH…oh, but it’s just a dream. OR IS IT?! Dark Seed is a game that has a lot of interesting dark secrets to it that are really interesting and highly disturbing.

It’s also a game that is very, VERY easy to die and/or get stuck in, so only diehard adventure gamers need apply. That or get a comprehensive walkthrough…but yeah. Fucked up, totally awesome, and with excellent writing, this is a game you must check out.

#2 – Quest for Glory 3

And once again, you might think it’s not fair for this to be on two lists, but DEAL WITH IT. QFG3 is a great adventure game full of clever puzzles that, again, change or are slightly modified depending on your class, abilities, etc. And again, same deal with the characters and interactions. There really isn’t much more to say above what I’ve already said as this is one of the weaker ones of the series, however, it should be noted that it’s the first VGA one, meaning it also has the new interface and an improved battle system.

#1 – King’s Quest 6

Regarded as the best of the King’s Quest titles, this is the best written and thought out of the King’s Quest series. It’s not the first VGA entry, but it does have some incredible artwork, animations, an FMV intro, multiple unique islands to explore, great characters and dialog, and lots of TOUGH AS BALLS puzzles. Since this one also relies on “fantasy logic,” it can be a bit tough at times, but there are also multiple ways to finish the game and certain puzzles that can be solved multiple ways.

Fun, challenging, and very well designed, KQ6 is truly a classic in adventure gaming.

Runner Ups

The runner ups this time aren’t BAD, but they could be a lot better. Again, some are more pervy titles, so definitely don’t play them with kids in the room. Even still these titles are worth checking out especially to give you a sense of what adventure gaming used to be like.
