Sports Shorts

In my continuing effort to talk about sports I give you sports shorts. When there is nothing major I want to talk about. I will just ramble about several topics at once. Kind of like my old Not Tycho News bit only about sports. If a real sports writer or hardcore fan ever reads this crap I may be ultra doomed

Right out of the gate let me congratulate the San Francisco Giants on winning the National League West. Two things to go along with that. What happened to the Dodgers man? I thought after all those high profile trades they would just win everything ever until they faced the Yankees in the World Series? Really throws a kink in the ESPN mantra if it ain’t LA, NY, Boston or possibly Philly it’s shit. Yeah I got an issue or two with that.

Uh oh looks like Senior VP Jim Devellano of the Detroit Red Wings is in hot water for comments made about the lockout. “In an interview earlier this week with Island Sports News, Devellano said that players should take 43 percent of the revenue, down from the 57 percent they currently receive.

“The owners can basically be viewed as the ranch, and the players, and me included, are the cattle,” Devellano said in the interview. “The owners own the ranch and allow the players to eat there. That’s the way it’s always been and that the way it will be forever. And the owners simply aren’t going to let a union push them around. It’s not going to happen.”” Best cattle analogy ever? Why yes it was and pretty damned accurate definition of all pro sports. Given the nature of the lockout and the NHL in general it was also not his brightest move. Wonder if his bosses in Detroit will make him fork over the 250k personally? Source: ESPN

I am getting really tired of everyone bitching about replacement referees in the NFL. Do they make mistakes? Yes, do they make mistakes the regular referees wouldn’t? Also yes and yet there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. Short of the NFL giving in to the normal referees. Problem is teams and players have taken a bad situation and made it worse in mind. I was even going to attempt a post on it until I read this Dan Wetzel column for Yahoo sports. I agree with him wholeheartedly and he got it down better than I could. Saved me a lot of time. I wrapped up my Sunday by watching a little Premiere League Football. I know an American watching footy on the telly. Absolutely nuts and yet totally true. I played football a good portion of my youth although crazy Americans call it soccer. It was Manchester United versus Liverpool, which Man U won 2-1. If your read the full article I will source there was a lot of controversy in the match. The one that got me was the 50-50 ball. That should have been two yellow cards at most. If I had gotten that treatment in youth soccer I would have been banned for life. Coaches always told us play hard for a loose ball. I got a couple cleat scars on my legs to prove it. Given how messy the game was I am not convinced the bad call screwed Liverpool, but it wasn’t right either. Source: ESPN
