This morning while doing paperwork, I tuned into the Apple rally to see if they were in fact unleashing the iphone 5 on the world. I had a twenty dollar bet going with an apple head buddy of mine on it. I was convinced from the start that it would be another 4 with minor updates. He was just sure it was going to be the 5. While reading the Engadget live blog a few other thoughts came to mind. Oh and if your are not aware yet I am now 20 dollars richer.
To begin, I am going to echo the sentiments of my twitter feed. If you really thought that the iphone 5 was getting announced today, your a naive schmuck and don’t quite get how apple operates. Apple like any large corporation likes money. So from a business perspective it makes sense to release the iphone 4s this year and the 5 next year. I figured that much out several months back when the rumors started swirling and I’m an incomplete idiot.
Other than the phone the only other thing I saw that mildly attracted my interest was Siri. Which is some kind of virtual assistant that will keep your life in order for you. Perfect for those of you who like being nagged and can’t find something to replace your mother in that department. Personally I think Siri will most likely go all Hal on us and be the harbinger of the end times. Until then it does sound like a cool feature. If your curious what else Apple has in store hit the link at the top of the article.
Finally with this announcement over and done, I’m still left with the same question I have always had about Apple. How does this company keep from getting a bad reputation? Look at how many different idevices this company releases each year and yet hardly any backlash. In reality they are no different than EA or Activision. We all know how the public perceives those two gaming giants. I have talked about this before on various podcast’s, but this time I may have a theory how Apple maintains it’s shiny image, while continuing to foist more and more shit on the market.
For a long time Apple was like the kid in school who got his ass kicked all the time. You remember him, the one you took lunch money from on a daily basis. (You thought I didn’t know did you) They were the underdog competing against the evil empire that is Microsoft. Apples computers had a cult following and to be part of that crowd made you cool and possibly hip. Somewhere along the release of the first iphone or possibly the macbook, Apple became something that the masses desired. This caused their popularity to sky rocket and yet they still managed to keep the campfire loving hipster image. Which makes zero sense to me, as they still manufacture your precious ios devices and computers in sweat shops in China. Really once you peel back the image layer of the company they are no different than Microsoft, Intel, EA, Activision, Motorola and the list goes on. Yet due to the fact the company was an underdog for so many years most people are willing to ignore this fact or they just flat don’t care. Which may say more about the people buying Apple products than it does the company itself.
I have no clue if my theory is in anyway shape or form correct. Honestly I don’t care what Apple does for the most part. I like and use the companies products and would use more if I could bloody afford to. Now if you’ll excuse me I am going to see about pre ordering an iphone 6. I heard a rumor that it’s going to come with holo porn. (think star wars)
