I am the proud owner of many a console, computer and hand held device from the glorious past. However one system I never owned was the Atari 2600. However I did have friends who had one and I manged to play some of the best titles for it over the years, but not nearly as much as I wanted to of course. I remember playing playing Pitfall and River Raid the most. So, when I discovered Air Fox HD was free (for a limited time) I just had to download this unofficial River Raid remake/clone. If your a fan of retro video games, you should download it as well pronto, as I have no idea how long “for a limited time” will last. Air Fox HD plays more or less exactly the same as the classic River Raid for the 2600 played, which is great for bringing back those retro moments from yesteryear. Air Fox HD has 3 methods of control, gyroscopic, arrows and retro. The best way to go is the retro option, but even with this method of control be prepared for some frustration as it is not entirely accurate. I was pretty bad at this game back in day and now with the addition of the less than perfect touch controls I am just as bad now, if not worse. Still, that does not stop the game from being a fun look back at how video games played on the Atari 2600. Check out the full version of the game while it is still free and don’t download the”lite” version by mistake like I did at first! Check out some screens below and I will return again with another FREE iPhone game next time!
River Raid and Yar’s Revenge were my two favorite Atari 2600 games. It was amazing how far developers were pushing that ancient platform towards the end of its run.
Classics never get old, John. We do. =)
