PatMan Picks Free iPhone Games. Hyperwave

The weekend is here and that can mean only one thing,  it is time for more FREE iOS games!  To be honest things around PatMan land have been a little “off ” as of late with freezing temperatures, snow storms and the flue virus invading my home. But that doesn’t mean I cant find a fun little iPhone game to waste some time with and share with you good people. Today I found one by the name of Hyperwave. Hyperwave is a very simple game really. All you do is move back and forth on the bottom of the screen with auto fire enabled. Your job is to make sure that nothing gets past you. That is really it. The game has a very simple but cool retro/techno look to it.  And for the first few levels the game almost feels, well, too easy. But that changes soon after. By the time I reached about level 7 I was surrounded with enemies attempting to get past me. As the levels proceed you are rewarded with many power ups for your ship to use in order to successively defend off the invaders, but even then things get very hectic and very fast. Hyperwave is a one of those time waster games that you can just pick up and play for a while and then put it down and forget all about it, and of course it is free to download for a limited time. Check out some screens I took below as always and I will see you next time!

Smackdown 1/11/13: WWE Once Again Spoils Their Own Show

What could happen on Smackdown tonight? Best to keep everyone in the dark, right? I mean, god forbit the outcome of a title match would be leaked on the dirt sheets, let alone on the WWE.com website itself. Seriously, right? That would be completely self-defeating and retarded. So clearly Alberto Del Rio didn’t win the title,. there’s no way! So grab your favorite burlap sack, ’cause it’s hoppin’ time!

Let’s see if the WWE can suspend my disbelief.

Steamed! – Gothic Universe Edition

Gothic Universe Edition

Current selling price: $9.99

Same thing applies here…I just wanted to talk about the original Gothic. Gothic is…a very mixed bag. Made from the creators of more recent titles such as Arcania and the Risen series, Gothic is a tale about a prisoner thrown into a magical barrier prison on a mission from a king…and is immediately sidetracked by being robbed and thrown into all kinds of internal power struggles that you can choose to or not to participate in.

The keyword to Gothic is depth. There is a ridiculous amount of choice and exploration available in Gothic. In fact, it’s very easy to get lost in everything that’s going on, but you’ll never feel overburdened either. If there were any two things I would say you’d need to know about the game before trying it…well, it would be that the game is devoid of quality and the controls are terrible.

Now no, I’m not simply trying to lead you on. The game’s overall production values are terrible and feel very basic. The controls, pretty much regardless of how fine you tweak them, are always going to feel off. You get a similar feel when playing the Risen games, but as these are more recent products, it’s not as bad of a feel. Gothic is very dated and as a result, may not appeal to everyone.

However, those it does appeal to will get WAY more out of it than almost any RPG released in the last 5 years alone. It really is a great idea, just having barely fallen short of what it intended to do, possibly due to budget constraints. All the same, $20 for THREE of these is an incredible deal that you should definitely participate in immediately (and even less now that it’s on sale). Screenshots follow.

Steamed! – Dungeon Siege Complete

Dungeon Siege Complete

Current selling price: $17.99

Really I just wanted to highlight the original Dungeon Siege, but hey, the others are cool too. I initially got into DS because of DS2, but I still think the original is my favorite. Why? Because it has a remarkably simple concept that it continuously builds on in a way that reflects what Diablo 2 has done, but from a more organic and interesting angle.

Okay, with the Diablo/Torchlight games, you’re encouraged to delve into dungeons or wherever and continuously build up your default class. You’re even given skill points when you level up to allow for additional customization. DS works quite a bit differently. There is no class. You’re just a simple farmer when this all starts and once shit goes down, you are absolutely NOT proficient in absolutely everything.

Over the course of the game you decide what you’re going to be proficient in by USING stuff. In other words, if you continuously use certain types of weapons, you get better at them and your stats level up to reflect this. If you use more spells, you become more of a mage type. It’s really interesting how it all plays out because the game very much leaves it up to you to decide how this is going to work.

This isn’t really as strong of a concept in the later games, but they’re still very fun all the same. I honestly feel that DS3 is the weakest of the bunch because even though it strikes a chord viscerally and from an overall high production angle, it loses a lot of what made the originals fun. Still, $30 for 3 classic dungeon crawlers…you can’t beat that (even less since it’s on sale). Screenshots follow.

Steamed! – ClaDun X2

ClaDun X2

Current selling price: $11.99

Honestly, this is the only one I feel is overpriced and I’ll explain why right off the bat. Yes, it is Nippon Ichi, but it is very, VERY basic. Maybe that’s a good selling point for some people, but I feel it’s still overpriced all the same. ClaDun X2 is basically a never-ending dungeon crawler with a lot of interesting and fantastic elements such as the ability to utilize multiple party members in a formation to enhance base character statistics, adding artifacts to do the same, allowing for several different weapon types and mods, and so on.

But I wouldn’t quite call it a Diablo clone. In fact, the dungeon crawling is really the only element anywhere similar to Diablo. The game is entirely bitisized, which gives it an interesting look and feel. You can create your own music, totally customize your characters and weapons from the ground up, and level up various features about your characters constantly.

I can’t even say there’s necessarily an end to the game as they say right from the beginning that there’s no way to get home. Could be, but doubtful. This game is designed to be an infinite dungeon of sorts while adding in newer, minor story elements here and there. All in all, it is very fun, but I think it would’ve been better priced at $10 or $15 (which it currently is since it’s one sale). Screenshots follow.

Google Nexus 7 (Impressions)

I decided earlier this winter that it was time to get a tablet. Then it was down to which operating system. Do I go with iOS or android? The choice for me wasn’t about price. I could get either. It was all about which device would integrate seamlessly with my set up. In the end I went with the Nexus 7 powered by Android. I must stress my choice is not a knock against Apple. I feel like I need to make that statement to keep the ignorant and mouthy at bay. So how has my first couple weeks with the Nexus been? Read on dear friends and find out.

Steamed! – BIT.TRIP BEAT

BIT.TRIP BEAT

Current selling price: $4.99

I’ve described this game as Pong on crack. The worst thing about this game is I can’t really say much more about it other than…well, what I just said. It’s simple, yet it really isn’t. Even the trailers don’t do it justice, honestly. Basically it is Pong, but there are several interesting elements thrown at you and it’s also an 8-bit musical all at the same time.

I really don’t know how to describe it other than that. Some people may feel that $10 is too much for a modern Pong, but I disagree. This is the kind of game that’s so addictive and for reasons you can’t quite put your finger on. It’s the kind of game you just keep playing and playing, if nothing for the visuals and music. Screenshots follow.

BWF Radio Episode 56

And then Khali died.

Oh man, wrestling fans… this week was one hell of a ride. We were joined by @AliceRadley of Rational Wrestling Review and rather quickly Jorge and Alice embark us onto a pretty entertaining diatribe about… things. We roll through the week of WWE, TNA, and ROH as usual and return to the madness that is the world of The Iron Sheik. The upcoming Wrestlers vs Zombies is discussed. J.T. reveals his disdain of the product that prompts a discussion of why we watch wrestling today, with some reference to the abuse of the fans by McMahon being akin to today’s announcement of the end of the NHL lockout. Velvet Sky crashes her car because of a little snow (we call that July in Canada), Daniel Bryan wants to become the most useless superhero in the Marvel universe, Fred Flinstone gets jobbed out, and much more!

Ensure you like Jorge’s facebook page here. He need’s 503 votes, and we will be able to coerce him into joining social media! Do it now! Make fake facebook accounts and make democracy legitimate!

BoredWrestlingFan Radio Episode 56 (MP3, 2:07:18)

Also… here are the videos discussed on today’s episode:

“Hockey Is Finally Back” ?

I am not a massive Hockey fan, but being Canadian I am of course overexposed to it, after all it is part of our culture and I appreciate that. The NHL is back, which is a good thing for some people. If it makes you happy, good for you. What has bothered me is not the NHL return, but the incorrect announcement from many people, especially on social media, that “Hockey is finally back”!  It amazes me that apparently some people have forgotten what hockey is and that  it never went away in the first place.  Hockey is many things to many people, really.

Hockey is kids playing pick up on the street outside, yelling “car” when it is time to move the nets and let the neighbor drive by. Hockey is part of the winter Olympics and part of our national pride. Hockey is University teams playing competitively for really nothing more than the name of the school that they play for. It is Moms and Dads getting up at 5 AM on a sub zero Saturday to bring the kids to the local arena for practice. Hockey is The Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, it is the Juniors ( too soon?), hell it is even the fun beer hockey leagues filled with out of shape guys who still think they “almost could have made it big”.  All of this , and much more, is part of  what “hockey” is. I could go on however you get the point by now so I will stop with the examples.

I am not a huge fan of the sport myself, but it is obvious even to me that hockey was going very strong this year, with or without out the NHL.  Now the NHL is back and yes, I fully understand that perhaps it is the most visible and famous aspect of hockey. The NHL is loved by many a hockey fan but perhaps just a few less after recent events.  To those that are making the announcement that ” Hockey is Finally back”, stop. The greedy millionaire players and billionaire owners associated with the NHL DO NOT DEFINE HOCKEY. The NHL is only a part of the sport, and as we found out with the lockout, hockey was alive without it this year. So, once again, I am happy for those of you that are excited that the NHL is back. Enjoy it. To those misled fans saying “Hockey is finally back”? The truth is simple. Hockey never went away. Only the greedy part of it did. Only the NHL.
